While Vishu is already in the database as the Malayalam New Year, the Vishu Kani tradition deserves expanded coverage for its unique visual and devotional significance. The most important ritual of Vishu is the Kani Kanal (first sight), where family members are led blindfolded to view an auspicious arrangement (Vishukani) as the first thing they see on New Year morning. The Kani consists of a brass vessel (uruli) or bell-metal mirror reflecting the image of Lord Krishna (Kannan), surrounded by golden konna flowers (Indian laburnum), rice, coconut, betel leaves, fruits, vegetables, gold coins, holy texts, and lit oil lamps. Elders give Vishu Kaineetam (monetary gifts) to younger family members. The traditional Vishu Sadya (feast) includes a full vegetarian meal served on banana leaves. Fireworks (padakkam) are burst throughout the day. Kerala temples, especially the Guruvayur Krishna Temple and Sabarimala, witness special rituals. The festival is celebrated primarily in Kerala and by Malayali communities in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu borders.
