About this image
The grandeur of Ganesh Chaturthi -- one of India's most beloved and vibrant festivals -- is on full display in this magnificent HD wallpaper of a decorated pandal at its most glorious. The central Ganesha idol is enthroned on an ornate golden seat, His benevolent form adorned with jewels and silks, surrounded by hundreds of warm fairy lights and traditional clay oil lamps that cast a golden glow across every surface of the elaborately constructed pandal. Marigold and jasmine garlands are draped everywhere -- over archways, around the idol, along the ceiling -- filling the entire space with the fragrance and color of devotion. At Lord Ganesha's feet lie offerings of modak sweets (His favorite food), fresh coconut, red hibiscus flowers, and incense that curls upward through dramatic beams of light. Ganesh Chaturthi, observed on the fourth day (chaturthi) of the bright fortnight of the Hindu month of Bhadra (August-September), marks the birthday of Lord Ganesha -- the elephant-headed son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The festival was given its current form of public celebration by freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 1893 as a means of uniting people across caste and class under a shared devotion. Today it is celebrated with unparalleled enthusiasm in Maharashtra and across India, with pandals (temporary decorated shrines) hosting idols for ten days before the visarjan (immersion) procession. The chant "Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudcha Varshi Laukar Ya" -- "O Lord Ganesha, come again early next year" -- fills the streets. This HD wallpaper captures the festival's spirit perfectly.
