About this image
The most emotionally charged moment of the entire Ganesh Chaturthi festival -- the Visarjan procession -- is captured here in all its dramatic nighttime glory. A large Ganesha idol is borne aloft on the shoulders of devotees, His golden form catching the light of dozens of torches and sparklers that fill the surrounding air with trails of warm gold. Orange and deep pink gulal powder clouds drift through the scene like colored smoke from the fire of devotion. In the background, the dark ocean waits -- its waves visible in the distance, ready to receive Bappa for His journey back to the abode of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The sky above is dark and dramatic, the city lights distant, and all attention is on this one profound act of ritual farewell. Ganesh Visarjan is practiced on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, or 10th day after installation, depending on the tradition of each family or pandal. The final Visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi -- the 10th day -- is the most spectacular, drawing millions into the streets of cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Hyderabad. As the idol enters the water and begins to dissolve, devotees chant "Ganpati Bappa Morya" with a grief and love that is difficult to describe -- as if farewell were being said to a beloved family member. The clay idol dissolving in water is a profound theological statement: form arises from formlessness and returns to formlessness; the deity who came to dwell among us returns to the infinite. This HD Ganesh Visarjan wallpaper captures that sacred grief and joy. Free download.
