In a dark prison cell at the stroke of midnight -- this is where one of the most extraordinary births in all of sacred history took place. The newborn Lord Krishna lies radiant in the darkness, His tiny form glowing with golden divine light that illuminates the cold stone walls and iron bars of the Mathura prison where King Kamsa had imprisoned His parents, Vasudeva and Devaki. Beside the infant, Vasudeva kneels in awe and prayer -- this devoted father who had given his word to the wicked king that he would surrender every child born to him, and who is now face to face with the child of God Himself. On the prison floor, heavy chains that had bound Vasudeva's wrists lie broken -- shattered by the divine power of the infant's arrival. Overhead, a single beam of celestial light descends from above, marking this cell as the most sacred place on earth in this moment. Janmashtami -- the birthday of Lord Krishna -- is celebrated with fasting, midnight prayers, the decoration of Krishna idols, and the breaking of the fast at exactly midnight, when the Lord is said to have been born. The story of Krishna's birth is a cosmic drama of divine intervention: Kamsa had been warned that the eighth child of Devaki would be his death. So he imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva and killed each child they bore. The eighth child was different. On the night of His birth, the prison guards fell into deep sleep, chains fell off walls, doors swung open -- and Vasudeva carried the infant Krishna through the stormy night to safety in Gokul.
