Lord Shiva performing the Tandava -- the fierce cosmic dance of destruction that ends each cycle of creation to make way for the new. His matted hair flies outward as storms gather around him, the trident spinning in one hand while cosmic energy crackles and lightning splits the sky. This is Shiva at his most terrifying and magnificent, the destroyer whose work is not evil but necessary -- nothing new can arise without the clearing of what is old and exhausted. The Tandava is said to have different forms: the Ananda Tandava (dance of bliss), the Sandhya Tandava (evening dance), and the most famous Rudra Tandava (fierce dance of destruction). It is said that when Shiva performs the Tandava at the end of a cosmic age, the vibration reaches every corner of existence and all manifestation dissolves back into pure consciousness. The storm clouds and lightning in this composition echo the mythological descriptions of the dance -- the entire cosmos trembling at the force of Shiva's movement.
