About this image
Mahakal -- Shiva as the Lord of Time and the Master of Death -- depicted in his most fierce and awe-inspiring form in the smashan (cremation ground). His blazing third eye radiates raw cosmic power, a garland of skulls hangs around his neck, the crescent moon glows above, and sacred ash covers his body as flames and bones surround him in the night. This is the form of Shiva most revered in the Mahakal tradition centered at the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga temple in Ujjain, one of the twelve most sacred Shiva temples in India. Mahakal devotees embrace the most extreme aspects of Shiva's nature -- his mastery over death, his presence in cremation grounds, his transcendence of all social norms. The cremation ground is where Shiva meditates not because he is associated with death as an end but because he alone is not afraid of it. For Shiva, the cremation ground is a place of truth -- where all pretense is stripped away and only the eternal remains. The intense dark imagery of this composition is exactly what Mahakal devotees seek for their phone wallpapers. Free HD download.
