About this image
Goddess Durga in the climactic moment of her greatest victory -- Mahishasura Mardini, the slayer of the buffalo demon. Her trident pierces the demon Mahishasura as her lion roars beside her and all ten arms swing divine weapons in a whirlwind of sacred violence. Red and gold explode across the composition against a dark stormy sky. This scene is the most iconic image in all of Shakti worship -- the moment when the combined feminine power of the universe overcomes an evil that no male god could defeat. Mahishasura had received a boon that no man or god could kill him, so he terrorized the three worlds with impunity. The gods pooled their energies to create Durga -- a being who was neither man nor god but something more powerful than both. The battle lasted nine nights (commemorated during Navratri) before Durga finally slew the demon on the tenth day (Vijayadashami). This Mahishasura Mardini composition is the standard iconographic form seen in millions of Durga Puja pandals across India every autumn. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
