Light enters the mosque through geometry -- and this HD wallpaper captures one of the most spectacular effects in Islamic architectural tradition: a mosque window of intricate geometric stained glass casting shafts of colored light deep into the dark interior. Jewel-toned red, blue, green, and gold light beams cross and mingle on the floor and walls of the prayer space, transforming the ordinary act of entering a building into an experience of walking into light itself. While stained glass is often associated with Gothic cathedrals, the Islamic tradition of geometric window screens (mashrabiyya, moucharabieh) and colored glass has been equally sophisticated and equally spiritually intentional. The great madrasas of Fez, the mosques of Isfahan, and the imperial mosques of Ottoman Istanbul all used colored glass -- sometimes in elaborate muqarnas niches, sometimes in simple geometric window screens -- to create this effect of light transformed into color and pattern as it enters the sacred space. The Quran uses light (nur) as one of the primary metaphors for divine knowledge and guidance: "Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp..." (Surah An-Nur 24:35). The mosque window translates this divine light into the visible spectrum, making it something that can be walked through, prayed in, and experienced with the whole body.
