About this image
This second variant of the Navadurga mandala presents the nine sacred forms of the divine mother in a slightly different artistic interpretation -- each of the nine goddesses rendered with the specific iconographic attributes that identify her to the devotee at a glance. The first night of Navratri honors Shailaputri, the mountain daughter, born as the daughter of Himavat (the Himalayas) in a previous birth as Sati. The second night brings Brahmacharini, the austere seeker who performed fierce tapas to win Shiva as her husband. Third is Chandraghanta, who bears a half-moon on her forehead and destroyed the demon Chand. Fourth is Kushmanda, the cosmic creator whose smile gave birth to the universe. Fifth is Skandamata, mother of the war-god Kartikeya (Skanda), depicted holding her infant son. Sixth is Katyayani, who was worshipped by the gopis of Vrindavan with the vow of winning Krishna as husband. Seventh is Kaalratri -- the most fearsome form, dark as the night of dissolution, with three eyes and disheveled hair. Eighth is Mahagauri, white as jasmine, riding her bull, who won her divine complexion back through penance. Ninth and final is Siddhidatri, who grants all eight supernatural powers (siddhis) to her devotees. Together these nine forms represent the complete cycle of divine feminine energy through which the cosmos is created, sustained, and dissolved.
