About this image
The Garba of Navratri is one of the most joyful and visually spectacular celebrations in all of India -- and this gorgeous HD image captures it at its finest. Women in magnificent chaniya choli outfits -- richly embroidered, mirror-worked lehengas in vivid red, orange, green, and magenta -- perform the circular Garba dance around the central garbha deep (sacred lamp), their dandiya sticks in hand and their expressions radiant with celebration. The motion blur on the spinning dancers suggests the hypnotic rhythm of the Garba, which can continue for hours through the night, the dancers circling the lamp in an ever-moving wheel of color and devotion. Garba derives its name from the Sanskrit "Garbha Deep" -- the lamp of the womb -- acknowledging the divine feminine energy at the center of the dance. The circular movement of the dancers around the lamp mirrors the cosmic orbit of planets around the sun, the cycle of seasons, and the relationship of all created things to the divine center. The mirror-work (abhla bharat) on Gujarat festival costumes is not merely decorative -- each small mirror is said to reflect the divine light, multiplying the sacred glow. Garba is performed in all nine nights of Navratri, but it reaches its greatest intensity in the eighth night (Ashtami) and ninth night (Navami) when the celebrations often extend until dawn. The largest Garba celebrations in the world take place in Ahmedabad and Vadodara, attracting hundreds of thousands of participants and recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
