About this image
The art form that defines Onam — the Pookalam — is captured in its most spectacular form in this top-down HD wallpaper. Intricate concentric circles of fresh flower petals fill the frame: orange marigold, white jasmine, yellow chrysanthemum, and red hibiscus arranged in traditional patterns that take skilled hands hours to create. At the center, a brass nilavilakku (oil lamp) burns with a warm golden flame, casting its light across the surrounding petals. Pookalam literally means "flower carpet" and is central to the ten-day Onam festival celebrated in Kerala, South India. Onam commemorates the annual visit of the beloved King Mahabali (Maveli) to his kingdom — a visit that Vamana (the dwarf avatar of Vishnu) allowed after pressing Mahabali into the underworld with his third step. According to legend, when Mahabali descends to visit Kerala during Onam, the gods celebrate by creating elaborate flower carpets to welcome him. The Pookalam is therefore both a greeting to the beloved king and a visual prayer — creating beauty on the earth in honor of divine benevolence. Different communities in Kerala compete in creating the most intricate and beautiful Pookalams. The Thrikkakara temple Pookalam, made in the shape of Vamana's footprint, is considered the most auspicious. Free HD download for Onam.
