About this image
Goddess Parvati seated in meditation on Mount Kailash, performing the tapasya (intense spiritual penance) through which she won the love of Lord Shiva. Her fair golden skin is softly illuminated against the snow-capped peaks behind her, wearing a simple green sari with minimal jewelry -- the marks of a devotee in deep spiritual practice rather than a goddess in royal splendor. Her serene, contemplative expression reflects the unwavering determination that defines her mythological character. The story of Parvati's tapasya is one of the greatest love stories in Hindu mythology. After Shiva's first wife Sati immolated herself, Shiva retreated into permanent meditation, refusing all connection with the world. Parvati, born as the reborn Sati, undertook years of severe penance in the Himalayas -- fasting, meditating in freezing snow, standing on one foot for years -- until even Shiva could not ignore the power of her devotion. The gods sent Kamadeva (god of love) to awaken Shiva, but Shiva burned him to ash with his third eye. It was only Parvati's own spiritual power that finally reached him. Her tapasya represents the teaching that genuine devotion is the most powerful force in the universe. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
