About this image
The most beloved Holi scene in all of Hindu devotion -- Lord Krishna playfully smearing brilliant pink and red gulaal on Radha's face as she laughs with pure divine joy, the sacred courtyard of Vrindavan behind them, clouds of colored powder surrounding their divine play. Krishna's blue skin glows through the haze of color; Radha's golden complexion blushes with both powder and delight. This is Rang Panchami -- the divine Holi of the sacred land of Braj. The tradition of Radha-Krishna Holi is one of the most ancient and beloved narratives in Hindu devotion. The Bhagavata Purana and numerous later texts describe Krishna's Holi celebrations in Vrindavan, where He would play with Radha and the gopis, filling the air with colors and the world with laughter. In the mystical interpretation of these texts, the colors represent the various rasas (divine emotions): red for love (shringar), pink for compassion (karuna), yellow for heroism (vira), blue for wonder (adbhuta). Krishna's Holi is not merely a festival but a cosmic event -- the Divine Lover calling the human soul (Radha) into the play of divine love. The Lathmar Holi of Barsana is particularly famous: in the days before the main Holi, women from Barsana (Radha's hometown) playfully beat men from Nandgaon (Krishna's hometown) with sticks while the men try to shield themselves -- re-enacting a legendary episode from Krishna's youth. This exquisite Radha Krishna Holi HD image captures that divine spirit of love and celebration. Free download.
