About this image
The grandest chariot procession in the world — the Jagannath Rath Yatra of Puri, Odisha — captured in breathtaking cinematic detail in this HD wallpaper. The massive Nandighosa chariot towers above the crowd with its iconic red and yellow striped canopy, ornate carved wheels and decorative fabric, the divine form of Lord Jagannath visible at the top. Thousands of devotees pull the chariot with thick ropes in a dramatic low-angle view, the Jagannath Temple gopuram (tower) rising in the background against a dark dramatic sky. The sheer scale of human devotion is awe-inspiring. The Jagannath Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival) is held annually on the second day of the bright fortnight of the Hindu month of Ashadha (June-July). Three chariots are pulled by thousands of devotees: Nandighosa for Lord Jagannath (45 feet tall), Taladhwaja for Lord Balabhadra (43 feet), and Darpadalana for Goddess Subhadra (38 feet). The chariots journey from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, approximately 3 km away, where the deities "visit" their maternal aunt for nine days before returning. The tradition inspired the English word "juggernaut" — derived from "Jagannath" — because the chariot was so massive and unstoppable. The Puri Rath Yatra is over 2,000 years old, mentioned in the Brahma Purana, Padma Purana, and Skanda Purana. Free HD download.
