The supreme act of cosmic sacrifice -- Lord Shiva drinking the Halahala poison at the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan) to save all of creation from annihilation. His throat turning a deep blue as Parvati presses his neck to prevent the poison from spreading beyond his throat, giving Shiva the name Neelkanth (Blue-Throated One). Gods and demons stand frozen in awe as the most powerful being in the universe voluntarily takes the world's most lethal substance into himself so that others may live. This story from the Bhagavata Purana is one of the most profound expressions of divine compassion in any mythology. The gods and demons had been churning the cosmic ocean to obtain Amrita, the nectar of immortality, but before the nectar could emerge, the terrible poison Halahala arose -- a substance so potent that it would destroy the three worlds instantly. Neither gods nor demons could handle it. Only Shiva stepped forward. His willingness to suffer so others could live makes this moment the Hindu equivalent of a cosmic redemptive sacrifice.
