About this image
One of the most visually striking and emotionally charged rituals in all of Hinduism — Sindoor Khela of Vijaya Dashami — is captured in this powerful HD wallpaper. Bengali married women smear bright red sindoor (vermillion powder) on each other's faces and on the Durga idol, their white sarees with red borders becoming increasingly stained with the sacred red. Crimson sindoor powder hangs in the air like a ritual cloud, expressions frozen in a moment of joyful grief — for this is the moment of farewell. The Durga idol in the background is being prepared for immersion. Sindoor Khela (literally "sindoor play") takes place on the afternoon of Vijaya Dashami — the final day of Durga Puja and the day of Durga's immersion (Visarjan). It is a ritual specific to married Bengali Hindu women. The sindoor represents their marital status and the blessing they receive by touching the Goddess directly. By smearing sindoor on Durga and on each other, the women both honor the Goddess's departure and share her blessings among themselves. The ritual has extraordinary visual power — the white sarees gradually overwhelmed by red, the emotion of farewell mixed with the joy of blessing received. "Subho Bijoya" — "happy victory" — is the traditional Durga Puja greeting exchanged during and after this ceremony. The Goddess has fought and won; she returns to Kailash until next year.
