About this image
One of the most iconic scenes in all of Hindu scripture -- Vasudeva carrying the infant Krishna across the raging Yamuna river -- is rendered here in magnificent cinematic drama. Vasudeva wades through chest-deep stormy water, his feet finding purchase on the unseen riverbed through sheer determination and divine grace. Above his head, raised with both trembling arms, a basket holds the newborn Krishna -- glowing with golden divine light even in the midst of the terrible storm. The Yamuna itself is a churning black mass of chaos, yet somehow Vasudeva keeps moving forward. Above father and infant, Shesha Nag -- the cosmic five-headed serpent -- rises from the water and spreads his great hood above the basket, acting as an umbrella against the driving rain. Lightning fractures the sky in the background, illuminating the entire scene with electric white light that makes the drama visible in every terrible and beautiful detail. This moment -- this crossing -- is the hinge point of cosmic history in the Vaishnava tradition. Without this night, without this desperate crossing, the child who would become the charioteer of Arjuna, who would speak the Bhagavad Gita, who would defeat Kamsa and dozens of other demons, who would be the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu -- none of it would have happened. The storm itself is said to have been sent by Kamsa's demons to stop Vasudeva. But nothing could stop the passage of God into the world. The Yamuna parted to allow Vasudeva's feet to touch the riverbed -- the waters recognized their Lord. This HD Janmashtami wallpaper honors that miracle. Free download.
