Jai Shri Ram! Vijayadashami -- the Day of Victory -- and here stands Lord Rama in the supreme moment of his earthly mission fulfilled. His divine form radiates with the golden light of victory: blue skin as deep as a monsoon sky, golden crown of Ayodhya's royal line, yellow pitambar (silk dhoti) blazing in the sunset light, and in his hands the magnificent Kodanda bow -- the divine weapon gifted by Varuna, the celestial bow whose string sings like the thunder of righteousness. His expression is the expression of dharma fulfilled: determined, just, compassionate even in triumph. In the background, the fallen form of Ravana is visible, the ten-headed king of Lanka brought low by the force of virtue itself. Beside Rama stand Lakshmana his devoted brother, Hanuman the greatest bhakta (devotee) in the Ramayana whose contribution to the victory was incalculable, and the vanara sena (monkey army) in celebration. On the distant horizon, the fortress of Lanka glows with the fire of its own ending. The sky above burns in the deep oranges and crimsons of a twilight that has never felt more sacred. The Ramayana of Valmiki, composed between 500-100 BCE, is one of the two great epics of Hindu civilization and one of the foundational texts of South and Southeast Asian culture. Lord Rama is revered as the seventh avatar of Vishnu -- the ideal man, the perfect king, the embodiment of dharma in human form.
