About this image
Lord Vinayaka in his classic standing form -- golden skin, four arms, the characteristic large belly that represents abundance and the capacity to contain all of the universe, elephant head with a single tusk, wearing an elegant dhoti and ornate ornaments. His faithful mouse Mushika (vahana) sits attentively at his feet while temple oil lamps burn warmly in the background. This is the definitive Vinayaka god image -- the composition that captures every essential element of his iconography in a single clean, readable frame. Vinayaka's broken tusk has a mythological explanation: when the sage Parashurama came to visit Shiva and Parvati, Ganesha blocked his path out of filial duty to protect his sleeping parents. In the fight that ensued, Parashurama threw his axe (a gift from Shiva), and Ganesha, out of respect for his father, received the blow on his tusk rather than deflecting it -- sacrificing a part of himself rather than disrespect a gift of Shiva. This single broken tusk became the symbol of his complete devotion. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
