About this image
A leather sling and five smooth stones against a bronze helmet the size of a cooking pot. The proportions are absurd. The sling weighs ounces. The helmet protected a man who stood over nine feet tall and had been a warrior since his youth (1 Samuel 17:33). Every calculation available to the human eye said this contest was over before it started. And every calculation was wrong. First John 5:4 uses the aorist tense for "has overcome" -- nikesasa -- indicating a decisive, completed victory. Not "is gradually overcoming." Not "might overcome if conditions are favorable." Has overcome. Done. The faith that overcomes the world is not a feeling of confidence. The Greek nikao is a military term. It means to conquer, to prevail, to win the engagement. John wrote this letter near the end of the first century, when the Christian community was small, persecuted, and surrounded by a Roman Empire that demanded worship of the emperor. The "world" in Johannine theology is not the planet. It is the system of values and powers that stands against God. And John says: you have already beaten it. Not by matching its power -- a sling does not match a sword -- but by operating under different rules entirely. The giant fell because he trusted his armor. David won because he trusted his God.
