Goddess Kamakshi is one of the most revered forms of the Divine Mother (Shakti) in South Indian Hinduism. Enshrined at the magnificent Kamakshi Amman Temple in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, she is considered the presiding deity of Kanchi β€” one of the seven Moksha-puris (cities of liberation) in Hindu tradition. Her name means "she whose eyes radiate love" (Kama = love, Akshi = eyes), reflecting her boundless compassion for all beings.

Kamakshi is worshipped as Lalita Tripurasundari, the supreme form of Shakti who embodies creation, preservation, and dissolution. She holds a sugarcane bow (representing the mind), flower arrows (the five senses), a noose (attachment), and a goad (repulsion) β€” symbolizing her mastery over the entire manifest universe. In her benevolent seated form (Padmasana), she grants both worldly prosperity and spiritual liberation.

The Kamakshi Amman Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, sacred sites where parts of Goddess Sati fell. It is believed that the navel of Sati fell at Kanchipuram, making it the center of Shakti worship. The great philosopher Adi Shankaracharya is said to have installed the Sri Chakra at this temple, converting Kamakshi from her fierce Ugra form to the peaceful seated form worshipped today.

Our collection features Goddess Kamakshi in her traditional iconographic forms β€” seated on a lotus throne with her four sacred weapons, adorned with gold jewelry and silk garments in the Kanchipuram style, surrounded by the sacred motifs of Sri Vidya worship. These images capture the divine grace and maternal warmth that millions of devotees experience at her sacred shrine.
