And between them, the kind of conversation that does not happen in offices or churches -- it happens at 10 PM over bad coffee in a vinyl booth, where honesty is easier because nobody is performing. "The God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God." Paul's logic in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 is circular on purpose. Comfort received becomes comfort given. The person who survives addiction sponsors the newcomer. The widow sits with the newly bereaved. The veteran walks the rookie through the first deployment. Paul wrote this letter from Macedonia, likely around 55-56 AD, after a period of severe personal crisis. He had been so "utterly burdened beyond strength" that he "despaired of life itself" (2 Corinthians 1:8). His comfort theology was not theoretical. He had lived it. The fluorescent diner light is unglamorous by design. Real comfort rarely happens in beautiful settings. It happens in hospital cafeterias, AA basements, and parking lots after funerals.
