About this image
Two passports on a desk -- one expired, one brand new. Same person, completely different photo. The old document stamped CANCELLED; the new one fresh, valid, official. A new identity has been issued. Paul's declaration in 2 Corinthians 5:17 is one of the most radical identity statements in all of Scripture. The Greek word for "new" here is kainos -- not neos (new in time, like a new model of an existing product) but kainos (new in kind, something that has never existed before). The person in Christ is not a renovated version of the old self but an entirely new creation -- as different from what came before as the butterfly is from the caterpillar. The expired passport in this image carries the weight of a past identity -- old addresses, old stamps, old photos that no longer look like you. It is who you were. The new passport is who you are now: same name perhaps, but a different person behind the eyes. Paul knew this transformation personally. He had been Saul of Tarsus, a persecutor of Christians, a zealot for the law, a man whose identity was built on religious performance. His encounter with Christ on the Damascus Road did not improve Saul -- it ended him. Paul emerged as someone new. "The old has gone, the new is here!" is not a gentle renovation but a demolition and rebuilding. The cancelled stamp on the old passport is the cross; the new passport is the resurrection.
