And 3 John 1:2 is the prayer behind it: "Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well." Third John is the shortest book in the Bible -- just 219 words in Greek. It is a personal letter from the apostle John to a man named Gaius, and it opens with this health blessing that millions of Christians now quote without knowing its intimate context. John was not issuing a theological declaration. He was writing to a friend. The word "dear" in the original Greek is agapete -- beloved. The breakfast table composition is intentional. Health in scripture is not separated from daily life. The Old Testament dietary laws in Leviticus, the wisdom literature's advice about moderation in Proverbs, and Paul's instruction that the body is a temple (1 Corinthians 6:19) all point to a tradition that sees physical health as connected to spiritual wellbeing.
