Archangel Uriel -- the least well-known of the four major archangels but perhaps the most intellectually fascinating -- depicted here holding the flame of divine wisdom in one hand and a book or scroll of sacred knowledge in the other. His robes are ruby red and gold, his large wings command the full height of the composition, and the fire and light around him speak to his domain over illumination in all its forms. Uriel's name means "God is my light" or "Fire of God" in Hebrew. He appears in the Book of Enoch, the Second Book of Esdras, and in Milton's Paradise Lost as one of the highest-ranking angels. He is the angel of wisdom, the patron of sacred arts, and traditionally the angel who stood at the gates of the Garden of Eden with a flaming sword. He is also associated with the giving of the Torah to Moses and is sometimes depicted as the angel who warned Noah of the flood. While Michael is the warrior, Gabriel the messenger, and Raphael the healer, Uriel is the scholar -- the archangel of those who seek deeper understanding of the divine mysteries.
