About this image
The lid is off. The ribbon is on the floor. The gift has been received, and the box sits open on warm wooden planks in morning light. What is striking about this scene is what is absent: there is no price tag, no invoice, no receipt showing what was paid. A gift, by definition, cannot be earned. The moment you earn something, it becomes a wage. Paul makes this distinction explicitly in Romans 4:4: "When a man works, his wages are not credited to him as a gift, but as an obligation." Ephesians 2:9 closes the door on any attempt to reclassify grace as compensation: "not by works, so that no one can boast." The Greek kauchaomai -- to boast -- does not mean arrogant bragging. It means to have grounds for confidence in yourself, to point to your own achievement as the basis for your standing. Paul eliminates that possibility entirely. You cannot point to anything you did. The gift was on the porch before you woke up. Martin Luther called this passage "the thunderbolt of grace" and built an entire reformation on its implications. If salvation is a gift and not a wage, then the entire apparatus of merit-based religion -- indulgences, penances, pilgrimages performed to earn favor -- collapses. The empty box says everything.
