About this image

You did not weave the fabric. You did not sew the seams. You did not engineer the deployment mechanism or calculate the drag coefficient. Someone else made the parachute. All you did was pull the cord. Ephesians 2:8-9 is the most concise summary of Protestant soteriology in scripture, and Paul constructed it with surgical precision. Three clauses, each carrying a theological payload. First: "by grace you have been saved" -- the Greek perfect tense sesosmenoi indicates a completed action with ongoing results. You have been saved and you remain saved. Second: "through faith" -- the channel, the mechanism, the cord you pull. Not the cause, but the means of accessing what was already provided. Third: "this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God" -- and the word "this" in Greek (touto) is neuter, while "faith" (pistis) is feminine. Paul is not saying faith itself is the gift. He is saying the entire arrangement -- grace, faith, salvation, all of it -- is the gift. The parachute and the cord and the air resistance and your presence in the aircraft and the fact that you are still alive to pull it. None of it originated with you. The blue sky in this wallpaper is not empty. It is full of the physics that make rescue possible. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
