Petrified wood -- it looks like stone, but it was once alive. You can still see the growth rings, the grain, the evidence of seasons when sap flowed and leaves unfurled. But somewhere over millions of years, mineral replaced organic matter cell by cell until what was once a living tree became rock. Beautiful rock, certainly. But stone all the same. Ezekiel 36:26 promises the reverse transformation: "I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh." The Hebrew is devastatingly precise. Lev ha-even (heart of stone) -- the heart that has become mineralized by disappointment, hardened by betrayal, petrified by grief until it can no longer feel. And lev basar (heart of flesh) -- soft, vulnerable, alive, capable of being hurt again. God's promise is not to make the stone heart harder (that would be safer) but to make it soft (which is terrifying). The petrified wood in this image is a perfect illustration because it shows that the structure of life remains even in stone -- the rings are still there, the grain is still visible. The heart of stone still remembers what it was like to be alive. And God sees those rings and says: I remember too. And I can reverse the process. Ezekiel wrote during the Babylonian exile (c. 586 BC), when the nation of Israel had hit bottom -- temple destroyed, people scattered, every promise seemingly broken.
