About this image
The blue cooler opens, and inside -- packed in ice, transported with urgency across distances -- is a new heart. Someone else's heart, given so that someone whose own heart has failed can live. This is the most literal possible illustration of Ezekiel 36:26: God performing a transplant, removing the organ that no longer works and replacing it with one that does. The medical reality of heart transplantation is itself a kind of miracle. The first successful human heart transplant was performed by Dr. Christiaan Barnard in Cape Town, South Africa, on December 3, 1967 -- and the theological parallels were not lost on the watching world. A heart that has stopped is replaced by a heart that beats. The recipient wakes up with someone else's heart pumping their blood, and they live. But Ezekiel's promise predates Barnard by 2,500 years. And the transplant God promises is even more radical: not a biological organ but the lev -- the Hebrew word for the seat of will, emotion, thought, and intention. When God gives a new lev, He is not merely fixing the circulatory system. He is replacing the entire operating system of the person -- how they feel, what they want, how they choose, who they love. The ice in the cooler keeps the new heart viable during transit. In the spiritual transplant, grace is the ice -- the preserving medium that keeps the gift alive during the difficult passage from promise to fulfillment. Free HD download.
