Bathukamma is a colorful floral festival unique to Telangana, celebrated by women during the nine days of Durga Navratri, concluding on Durgashtami. The name means Mother Goddess Come Alive, and it is dedicated to Goddess Gauri, a form of Parvati. Women create beautiful conical flower arrangements (bathukammas) using seasonal wildflowers like gunuka, tangedu, banti, and chamanti stacked on brass plates. In the evenings, women gather in open spaces, place their bathukammas in the center, and dance around them in circles singing traditional folk songs describing mythology, nature, and everyday life. On the final day, Saddula Bathukamma, the flower stacks are immersed in lakes and ponds. The festival was declared the state festival of Telangana in 2014. It celebrates feminine creativity, community bonding, and the monsoon season when wildflowers bloom abundantly across the Deccan plateau. The festival has gained increasing national recognition for its unique beauty and cultural significance.
