Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, marks the first day of the five-day Diwali celebration and falls on the thirteenth day of the dark half of the Hindu month Kartik. The festival is dedicated to Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda, and Goddess Lakshmi. Devotees clean their homes, draw rangoli patterns at entrances, and light diyas to welcome Lakshmi. Purchasing gold, silver, utensils, or new items is considered highly auspicious and believed to bring good fortune throughout the year. In many parts of India, small footprints are drawn with kumkum and rice flour from the entrance to the puja room, symbolizing the arrival of Lakshmi. The festival is celebrated pan-India with particular enthusiasm in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and North Indian states. Markets and jewelry shops witness their highest sales of the year on this day.
