Jagaddhatri Puja is a major festival of West Bengal dedicated to Goddess Jagaddhatri, a form of Durga depicted riding a lion and slaying a demon elephant. It is celebrated on the ninth day of the bright fortnight of the month of Kartik, a few weeks after Durga Puja and Kali Puja. The most famous celebrations are in Chandernagore (Chandannagar) and Krishnanagar in West Bengal, where elaborate pandals and illuminated processions rival those of Kolkata Durga Puja. Chandernagore Jagaddhatri Puja is renowned for its spectacular lighting decorations along the Hooghly River, a tradition influenced by the town French colonial heritage. The immersion processions with illuminated idols floating on the river create an extraordinary visual spectacle. The festival is also widely celebrated in Hooghly, Burdwan, and other districts of Bengal, as well as in parts of Odisha and Assam. According to legend, the worship was initiated by Maharaja Krishnachandra Roy of Krishnanagar in the 18th century. The festival generates significant search interest for Durga and goddess images.
