Mysuru Dasara is Karnataka state festival, celebrated for ten days during Navratri culminating on Vijayadashami. It has been celebrated with grandeur since the Vijayanagara Empire in the 15th century, and the Wadiyar dynasty of Mysore continued the tradition for over 400 years. The highlight is the Jamboo Savari procession on Vijayadashami day, where an idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari is carried on a golden howdah (mantapa) atop a decorated elephant through the streets of Mysuru from the illuminated Mysore Palace to Bannimantap. The palace is lit with nearly 100,000 light bulbs during the ten nights, creating a stunning spectacle. Cultural programs, exhibitions, sports events, and a grand torchlight parade are held throughout the festival. The Dasara exhibition at Bannimantap grounds is one of the oldest exhibitions in India. The celebrations attract tourists from across the world and have been recognized as a heritage event of national importance.
