While Navratri is celebrated across India, Gujarat Navratri Garba celebration is the world largest open-air dance festival and was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2023. For nine nights, millions of people across Gujarat perform Garba (circular devotional dance around an earthen lamp or goddess idol) and Dandiya Raas (dance with sticks) at thousands of venues. Cities like Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, and Rajkot host massive organized events with stages, live orchestras, and space for tens of thousands of dancers. Participants wear elaborate traditional chaniya choli (women) and kediyu (men) in vibrant colors. The dance is performed in concentric circles around a central shrine housing the goddess, symbolizing the cosmic cycle of creation. Each night is dedicated to a different avatar of the goddess, with specific colors assigned to each day. Corporate-sponsored mega events feature celebrity performers and attract international tourists. The festival has become a major cultural export, with Garba nights organized by Gujarati communities worldwide.
