Thai Poosam Kavadi is the elaborate kavadi-bearing tradition associated with the Thaipusam festival, celebrated primarily in Tamil Nadu, and among Tamil communities in Kerala, Karnataka, and globally. Devotees carry ornate kavadi structures decorated with peacock feathers, flowers, and images of Lord Murugan (Kartikeya) on their shoulders to fulfill vows. The most intense form of devotion involves piercing the body, cheeks, and tongue with vel (spears), symbolizing the divine lance given by Goddess Parvati to Murugan to defeat the demon Surapadman.
