About this image
A magnificent portrayal of Shanmukha — the supreme six-faced form of Lord Murugan — in the traditional Tamil devotional calendar art style. Each of the six faces (Aru Mukham) looks in a different direction, representing the six divine qualities: wisdom, strength, beauty, fame, wealth, and detachment. His twelve arms hold an array of sacred weapons and symbols — the Vel (divine lance), sword, shield, bow, arrow, conch, discus, and blessing mudras. Seated majestically upon his peacock mount, adorned with golden ornaments and flower garlands, Shanmukha radiates divine authority and grace. The sacred temple gopuram rises behind him, with oil lamps (deepam) burning on either side. A lotus flower blooms at the peacock's feet. The name Shanmukha means "six-faced" in Sanskrit, and this form is the presiding deity of the Arupadaiveedu — the six battle camps of Murugan in Tamil Nadu: Thiruparankundram, Tiruchendur, Palani, Swamimalai, Thiruthani, and Pazhamudircholai. This traditional calendar art style image is deeply familiar to Tamil devotees, who display similar prints in homes and shops across South India.
