An old name tag being replaced with a new one -- the old name crossed out with a single deliberate line, a new name written beneath it. Same desk, same pen, but a different person is about to walk out of this office. Galatians 2:20 is Paul's most compact autobiography: "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me." Three clauses, three seismic shifts. First: crucified. The old Paul -- Saul of Tarsus, Pharisee, persecutor -- is dead. Not reformed, not improved, not given a second chance. Dead. Crucified alongside Christ at Calvary, retroactively, mystically, really. Second: I no longer live. The pronoun "I" has been emptied of its old content. The ego that drove Saul to arrest Christians is dissolved. The identity built on law-keeping and religious achievement has been cancelled -- crossed out on the name tag. Third: Christ lives in me. The new occupant of the body formerly known as Saul is Christ Himself. Not Paul trying to imitate Christ, not Paul following Christ's example, but Christ actually living in and through Paul. This is not metaphor for Paul -- it is operational reality. The name tag swap in this image captures the moment of transition: the old identity visibly cancelled, the new identity being written. In the ancient world, a new name was a new identity -- Abram became Abraham, Jacob became Israel, Simon became Peter. The crossed-out name is not erased but overwritten.
