Good Night -- The Lord is your protector. A single candle burns in a dark room, and its light casts a cross-shaped shadow on the wall behind it -- the most minimal and beautiful Christian image possible, requiring nothing but a flame and a cross-shaped holder, saying everything with light and shadow. The candle is one of the oldest devotional symbols in Christianity, dating to the earliest underground church meetings of the first and second centuries when candles were carried both for literal illumination and as symbols of Christ, the Light of the World. "I am the light of the world," Jesus said (John 8:12). "Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." The cross shadow -- cast on the wall by the flame burning before the cross-shaped holder -- is a reminder that the light of Christ is always shaped by the cross, always carrying the marks of what it cost. The light is not cheap. It was purchased at great price, and it burns steadily now, through the night, through the darkness, through every fear that comes in the small hours. Psalm 121:5 contains the bedtime promise: "The Lord watches over you -- the Lord is your shade at your right hand." Shade in the Psalm refers to protection from harsh sun in the daytime; but protection from the darkness of night is equally implied. The cross shadow on the wall is that protection made visible -- the shape of the greatest sacrifice still casting its light across every ordinary room where someone chooses to end their day by a candle in the dark.
