Good Night -- God Bless You and Keep You. This second evening village scene shows the same peaceful setting from a slightly different perspective -- the crescent moon above a quiet village where every window is dark except for the warm glow of the church, which seems to stay alight even when the rest of the world sleeps. The stars above have been counted. Every one of them. "He determines the number of the stars; he gives to all of them their names" (Psalm 147:4). The God who calls each star by name also knows your name, knows the dreams you will have tonight, knows what tomorrow holds that you are worried about. The nighttime blessing tradition runs deep in Jewish and Christian Scripture. Numbers 6:24-26 contains the oldest known blessing in the Hebrew Bible, the Aaronic Blessing: "The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace." This blessing was given to Moses for Aaron to pronounce over the people -- a benediction as the day ended. The church in the painting carries on this tradition: even architecturally, the steeple is a blessing hand raised toward heaven on behalf of the community below.
