Good Night -- May God watch over you as you sleep. This is the hour when faith becomes most intimate -- when the busy activities of the day have ceased and the soul is alone with its Maker in the quiet of sleep. Psalm 121 is the great psalm of nighttime protection: "He who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep." This is an extraordinary claim -- God does not sleep. While you sleep, He watches. While you are vulnerable, undefended, unconscious, He remains awake, alert, present. The church steeple in the moonlit village is the visual sign of that presence -- the house of God standing in the center of the human community, marking the place where heaven and earth agree to be neighbors. Psalm 4:8 carries the night-prayer of one who can sleep in peace: "In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety."
