About this image
An architect rolls out blueprints on the hood of a truck, and the building exists. Not in steel and concrete -- not yet. But it exists on paper in a form that is legally binding, structurally sound, and precise to the millimeter. You can get a construction loan against those plans. A bank will lend you millions based on a building that is currently nothing but an empty lot and a drawing. That is hypostasis -- the Greek word in Hebrews 11:1 that English translators have struggled with for centuries. "Substance" misses it. "Confidence" is closer but still vague. Title deed is the real idea. The blueprint IS the building in its pre-physical form. When the author of Hebrews wrote this letter, likely before the destruction of the Jerusalem temple in 70 AD, the recipients were watching everything visible crumble. Their social standing, their community, possibly their safety. And into that, this letter says: what you cannot see is more real than what you can. The empty lot does not mean the building is imaginary. It means the building has not arrived yet. But the plans are drawn, the deed is signed, and the foundation is coming.
