About this image
The dock ends. The fog begins. And somewhere inside that white nothing, there is a rowboat. Hebrews 11:1 is possibly the most quoted definition of faith in existence, and it is routinely misunderstood. Faith is not a feeling. The Greek word hypostasis, translated "confidence" or "substance," is a legal and philosophical term. In first-century Greek documents, hypostasis appeared in property deeds -- it meant "title deed," the document that proved you owned something you might not be physically holding. You own the house even while standing in a different city. The deed is your substance. The second word, elenchos, translated "assurance" or "evidence," comes from courtroom language. It means proof, the kind that convicts. Not wishful thinking. Not optimism. Evidence. So Hebrews 11:1 is saying: faith is the title deed for what you hope for, and the courtroom evidence for what you cannot see. That is a remarkably precise definition from a letter written to Jewish Christians in the mid-first century who were tempted to abandon their faith under persecution. The author is not asking them to feel better. He is asking them to recognize what they already hold. This wallpaper captures that threshold moment -- the step between solid wood and open water.
