The word "impossible" appears in the Bible less often than you might think. When it does appear, it carries absolute weight. Hebrews 11:6 uses adynaton -- without power, without possibility, without workaround. There is no alternative path. Without faith, pleasing God is not difficult, not unlikely, not improbable. It is impossible. The safe in this image reinforces that finality. Without the combination, the contents are inaccessible. It does not matter how strong you are, how sincere you are, how many other good qualities you bring to the door. The mechanism requires a specific input: faith. But the verse does not stop at the locked door. It continues with a reward: "he rewards those who earnestly seek him." The Greek word ekzeteo -- "earnestly seek" -- is an intensified form. Not casual looking. Not stumbling upon. Seeking with the full weight of your attention, the way a miner follows a vein of ore deeper into the rock because he knows it leads to something valuable. The author of Hebrews wrote to people who were losing their social standing for their faith. The reward was not visible. The cost was. And yet: seek, and the reward comes.
