About this image
Lane one. Your lane. The lines are freshly painted and the surface is damp with morning dew. No one else is in the stadium. The race described in Hebrews 12 is not a sprint and it is not a group event. The Greek word prokeimenon -- "marked out" -- means set before, laid in advance. Your specific race was designed before you started running it. The lane markers are not suggestions. They are boundaries that define YOUR particular course, distinct from the person in lane two or lane eight. Ancient Greek athletic games at Olympia, Corinth, and other sites used individual lanes marked with lime powder. Runners who crossed into another lane were disqualified. The metaphor would have been immediately vivid to the original audience -- many of them lived within a day's walk of a stadium. But the detail that makes Hebrews 12 unique among New Testament race metaphors is verse 2: the pioneer and perfecter of faith. Jesus is not in the stands watching. He is not at the starting blocks waiting for you. He is the one who ran this exact course before you did, finished it, and is now seated at the destination. The course is proven. Someone has already completed it. The morning dew will burn off. The gun will fire. Your lane is ready. Download this HD scripture wallpaper.
