About this image

Mid-stride, the backpack drops. The weight falls away and the runner surges forward, lighter, faster, unencumbered. Hebrews 12:1 names two things to shed: "everything that hinders" and "the sin that so easily entangles." These are different categories. Sin is obvious. But "everything that hinders" -- the Greek word ogkon means bulk, mass, excess weight -- includes things that are not sinful at all. Good things. Comfortable things. Things you have carried for so long they feel like part of you. The author is writing to people who had been running this race for years. They were tired. Chapter 10 tells us some had been publicly humiliated, imprisoned, had their property confiscated. And they endured it. But now, perhaps decades later, they are flagging. The writer does not scold them. He reframes the situation: you are in a race, you are surrounded by witnesses (the heroes of chapter 11), and the finish line is a person, not a place. "Fixing our eyes on Jesus" -- the Greek word aphorao means to look away from everything else in order to look at one thing. It is the focus of a runner who has stopped checking the crowd and is now staring only at the tape. This golden-hour scene captures the exact moment of release.
