Someone made soup. Not because they were asked, not because it was their job, but because someone they love is hurting and this is what hands do when words are not enough. The steam rises from the ceramic bowl in thin curls, carrying the smell of care into a room that needed it. "Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem." Isaiah 40 opens the section of Isaiah that scholars call Deutero-Isaiah -- the chapters addressed not to pre-exile Judah but to exiles already in Babylon, already decades into displacement. The double imperative "comfort, comfort" (nachamu nachamu in Hebrew) is emphatic. It is not a suggestion. It is a command issued by God to his prophets: go and tend to my people. The phrase "speak tenderly" is literally "speak to the heart" in Hebrew -- al-lev. Not to the mind, not to the will, but to the heart. And sometimes speaking to the heart means not speaking at all.
