Islamic geometric art contains one of the most sophisticated tessellation traditions in the history of human visual culture -- and this HD wallpaper renders a modern interpretation of that tradition in the spirit of M.C. The connection between Islamic geometric art and M.C. Escher is historically documented -- Escher visited the Alhambra palace in Granada in 1922 and again in 1936, spending days carefully copying the tile patterns and later writing that his visit "had been the richest source of inspiration I have ever tapped." The Islamic craftsmen who created these patterns in the 13th-14th centuries had worked out all of the mathematical principles of tessellation -- the ways in which shapes can tile a plane without gaps or overlaps -- centuries before modern mathematics formally described them. Peter Lu and Paul Steinhardt's 2007 study in the journal Science demonstrated that 15th-century Islamic geometric patterns on the Darb-i Imam shrine in Isfahan used quasi-crystalline Penrose-like patterns not described by Western mathematics until 1970.
