About this image
The Rub el Hizb (from Arabic: "quarter of the party/group") is one of the most significant symbols in the Islamic visual tradition -- an eight-pointed star formed by overlapping two squares, traditionally used in Quran manuscripts to mark the end of every quarter-hizb (a division of the Quran into 60 parts for systematic recitation). This stunning HD wallpaper centers on a large Rub el Hizb rendered in ornate gold filigree, its eight points radiating from the overlapping squares at the center, surrounded by flowing arabesque patterns that fill the surrounding space in endless organic complexity. The eight-pointed star (khatam or khatam al-anbiya) has deep symbolic resonance in Islamic tradition. Eight is associated with the eight angels who carry the Throne of God (Arsh), the eight gates of paradise, and the eight-fold nature of divine mercy. The overlapping squares from which the star is formed represent the union of earthly and heavenly realms, of the seen and unseen, of dunya (this world) and akhira (the hereafter). The Rub el Hizb also appears on national flags -- notably of Morocco and Mauritania -- as well as on countless historical artifacts, manuscripts, architectural surfaces, and decorative objects from the Atlantic coast to Central Asia. The filigree rendering in this wallpaper, suggesting delicate metalwork, connects to the tradition of Islamic jewelry and decorative metalwork in which this symbol appears on rings, pendants, and amulets as a mark of Quranic connection.
