About this image
Fourteen hundred degrees. That is the melting point of gold. Below that temperature, the metal sits unchanged -- beautiful, solid, but hiding its impurities within the crystalline structure. Only extreme heat reveals what does not belong. The dross rises to the surface, visible now, separable now, removable now. Before the fire, you could not distinguish the pure gold from the contamination. After the fire, the distinction is undeniable. James opens his letter with what might be the most counterintuitive instruction in the New Testament: consider trials pure joy. The Greek word hegeomai -- "consider" -- is not an emotional command. It is an intellectual one. It means to evaluate, to assess, to reach a considered judgment. James is not saying "feel happy when bad things happen." He is saying: think about it correctly. Reframe what you are experiencing. The testing of your faith -- and the Greek dokimion means a test designed to prove genuineness, like an assay test for precious metals -- produces hypomone, steadfast endurance, the ability to remain under pressure without breaking. And James says: let that process finish. Do not pull the gold from the fire too early. Let perseverance complete its work. The dark workshop in this wallpaper is not a place of punishment. It is a refinery. What goes in is valuable. What comes out is pure. Free HD download for phone and desktop.
