"Pray for each other so that you may be healed" is not an abstract instruction in this HD wallpaper. It is happening in real time, in a room that smells of antiseptic and hope. James, the brother of Jesus and leader of the Jerusalem church, wrote this letter to scattered Jewish Christians around 48-50 AD, making it possibly the earliest New Testament document. His instructions about prayer for the sick in James 5:14-16 have shaped Christian pastoral care for two millennia. The Catholic sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, the Pentecostal tradition of laying on hands, and countless hospital chaplaincy programs all trace their practice back to these verses. The warm fluorescent lighting of the hospital room contrasts with the cold institutional setting. It is a small mercy -- the kind of mercy that a visitor brings simply by showing up. The text reminds us that prayer is not passive. James calls it "powerful and effective," using the Greek word energeo, from which we get the English word "energy."
